Review: Impulse by Ellen Hopkins

4 stars

Impulse is a story told in verse. It involves three teens who each tried to commit suicide, and are now in a psychiatric hospital called Aspen Springs, who eventually come together as friends.

Overall I thought it was fantastic, and really well-written. The twists kept you guessing and were unexpected, especially towards the end. The whole time I was rooting for the characters to fight through everything.

Review: Amy and Roger's Epic Detour

Amy & Roger's Epic Detour - Morgan Matson

This is about Amy and Roger, who go on a road trip when Roger drives her to move in with her mother, who she hasn't seen in a month. Amy's mother has the entire trip planned out but Amy and Roger decide to take a detour, which involves going places completely different from schedule - and eventually to places that aren't even on the way.

Throughout the road trip Amy and Roger get to know each other, and she also meets several other characters who, while they play small parts, are very interesting. It was nice to see Amy open up over the course of the book and to see her relationship with Roger develop.

I stayed up late to finish this book (until one in the morning!) and definitely didn't regret it. To me it was a bit of a slow start, but once I got into the story I was hooked. I loved the little bits and pictures, and how the state mottos were incorporated into the book.

Overall I love it, would recommend it to anyone, and have given it 5 stars. It was perfect.

The One You Love Review

The One You Love (suspense mystery) - Paul Pilkington

The One You Love is about a girl named Emma whose fiancé goes missing. They find his brother in the house hurt, and he ends up in a coma which he might not wake up from. Throughout the book each character has several suspects, which is great and leaves the reader wondering as well.

I loved seeing into everyone’s thoughts and knowing their opinions on what happened and what they were doing. Emma’s being so involved in finding out what happened was great, and I loved her character. The mysteries on the side were nice too, like her brother Will’s secret, and what happened between Emma and her ex, Stuart. They give the reader different things to think about while still tying back into the story nicely.

The one thing I had a problem with was the dialogue. It threw me off in the beginning and to me just didn’t seem believable. I can’t see people talking that way, it didn’t seem to flow right.

Overall it was still amazing, and it was free on iBooks! Definitely recommend.

The Secret Garden Review

The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett

This is a story about Mary, who moves in with her uncle after her parents die. She’s pretty unlikeable and doesn’t really like anything either, and the book is mostly about her getting over this and learning to love. She grows up and grows stronger as she uncovers the secrets of the house she lives in, including a secret garden and a boy named Colin.

I loved this book so much. The characters were amazing and I began to love them all, even the ones I didn’t at first. I enjoyed that I could feel so much for some of the characters who were barely in the book, such as Dickon’s mom. She was described to be loved even by those who did not know her, and since we did not actually see her until later in the story I was able to experience this. I liked her just by hearing of her a few times, before being able to ‘meet’ her with Mary and Colin.

Character development was really great as well, especially with Mary and Colin. I didn’t like Mary much at the beginning, but she pulled through at the end and I loved watching her learn and grow through the story. I liked the way it was told as well; you get to read not only what the characters think, but what they don’t know as well, things they don’t realize. I think it adds more depth to the story.

This has become a favorite and one I will probably re-read in the future. I definitely would recommend it to anyone.
